Heaven Lake or Lake of Heaven (Chonji in Korean; Tianchi in Chinese) is a crater lake on the border between China and North Korea. Claimed as the most beautiful lake in the world, although perhaps a nickname given because of the lake surge in high places. The lake is situated in a volcanic caldera at the summit of Mount Baekdu, part of the mountains Baekdudaegan and Changbai mountains. The lake is partially located in the province of Ryanggang, North Korea, at 42.006 128.057 ° NE °, and partly in Jilin Province, northeast China.
At an altitude of 2,189.1 m (7182 ft), Heaven Lake is the highest crater lake in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. This lake covers an area of 9.82 km ² (3.79 sq mi) north-south length of 4.85 km (3.01 miles) and east-west length of 3.35 kilometers (2.08 miles). The average depth of this lake is 213 m (699 ft) and a maximum depth of 384 m (1,260 ft). From mid-October until mid-June, Chonji closed with ice.
In ancient Chinese literature, Tianchi also refers to the Nanming (?? is sometimes translated as "southern sea"). Some other famous lake named Tianchi including those in Xinjiang and Taiwan. In the legends of North Korea, Kim Jong-Il claimed were born in the mountain near the lake. Many believe that the lake is home to Lake Tianchi Monster. It is not known clearly about the monster and the legends associated Kun.
